Why is mosque acoustics different?
Prayer halls are large spaces with hard reflective surfaces (marble, glass, gypsum), creating long reverberation times that make speech unintelligible. A proper design balances:
- Sufficient sound level at every point in the mosque
- Speaker aiming away from reflective surfaces
- Acoustic treatment of walls where needed
- Speech-frequency clarity (300 Hz – 4 kHz) above everything else
Components of a complete mosque sound system
1. Speakers
For most mosques, column speakers are the best fit: they direct sound horizontally toward worshippers and reduce ceiling and floor reflections. In large mosques we add delay speakers at the rear for uniform clarity.
2. Microphones
The imam's microphone is the single most important element. We recommend a high-sensitivity gooseneck at the mihrab with a wireless backup for sermons and lessons.
3. Mixer and DSP
A digital signal processor automatically manages levels, prevents feedback, and routes audio to separate zones: prayer hall, women's prayer area, outdoor courtyards — each with independent volume.
4. External adhan system
Minaret speakers need independent calibration that respects local noise regulations while ensuring the adhan reaches the neighborhood.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying powerful speakers without an acoustic study — excess power makes echo worse
- Placing speakers on opposing walls — causes interference and muddiness
- Neglecting balanced coverage in the women's prayer area
- Not training the muezzin and imam on the system
